About 한식

Korean cuisine (hansik) is built around balance — fermented sides (banchan), a steaming bowl of rice, and a main dish that changes with the season. Meals are served all at once rather than in courses, and sharing dishes at the table is the norm. The depth of flavor comes from slow-fermented pastes like doenjang (soybean) and gochujang (chili), which form the backbone of soups, stews, and marinades across the country.

About Mapo-Gu

Mapo-gu — home to Hongdae, Sinchon, and Hapjeong — is Seoul's youth and arts district, defined by its university population, live music venues, and creative energy. The food scene is diverse, affordable, and experimental: trendy cafés, late-night pojangmacha, global street food, and boundary-pushing restaurants all compete for attention in this perpetually buzzing neighbourhood.

(August 2025) We found the perfect summer meal to beat the heat! Cold, light, and very refreshing without feeling heavy. The noodles had a great chewy texture. [1] Seonbi Naengmyeon (선비냉면 – spicy bibim naengmyeon) had a clean kick that wasn’t overpowering, while [2] Pyongyang Naengmyeon (평양냉면 – mild mul naengmyeon) broth was subtle, nutty, and savoury with a very clean finish. Great spot in Hongdae if you’re craving traditional naengmyeon in the heat. Note: English menu is available or you can use Papago to translate. — Seonbi Naengmyeon (선비냉면) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Pyongyang Naengmyeon (평양냉면) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Seogwan Myeonok had a quiet and clean atmosphere. That day, I ordered three dishes — Goldong Naengmyeon, Dot Jaeyuk, and Hanwoo Suyuk. The Dot Jaeyuk was a cold boiled pork dish, sliced thinly and served without heavy seasoning. The balance of lean meat and fat was good, and the texture was soft and clean. It had no strong smell, and dipping it lightly in salted shrimp sauce gave it the perfect amount of saltiness. Even though it was served cold, the flavor of the pork came through naturally. The Hanwoo Suyuk was served warm, with thin, tender slices of Korean beef. It was light and not greasy, and dipping it in the soy-based sauce brought out just the right seasoning — slightly salty, yet still mild and balanced. The warmth of the beef went well with the cold noodles, making it a comfortable pairing. The Goldong Naengmyeon had a richer, more savory taste than the classic Pyeongyang style. The combination of light soy sauce and sesame oil gave it a pleasant aroma and soft flavor. It wasn’t spicy, but flavorful enough for those who prefer something less plain. The buckwheat noodles were smooth and had a gentle nutty scent. Altogether, the three dishes complemented each other nicely — the warm beef, the cool pork, and the aromatic noodles made a balanced and satisfying meal. Everything was simple, clean, and focused on the natural taste of the ingredients.
