Manna Restaurant, a hidden gem in Mapo, showcases the essence of North Korean dumplings from Pyeongan Province, rather than elaborate techniques. Visually stunning, the nearly translucent dumpling skin melts in your mouth, maximizing the delicate texture of the filling. This is the restaurant's unrivaled signature.
The broth initially appears clear and bland, almost like a warm version of Pyongyang naengmyeon. However, as it simmers, the sweetness of the vegetables and the meat broth combine to create a deep, savory flavor. It's a subtle yet lingering sensation, a subtle yet stimulating experience. This reawakens the essence of comfort in a world of intense dining.

From the kimchi to the dumplings, everything is slightly sour, but perhaps that's just a characteristic of North Korean cuisine.
A dumpling stew for four costs 44,000 won, and includes noodles. Adding fried rice will make you full.

With the weather getting colder, I crave a warm soup, so I decided to try Mandu Hot Pot.
Today, I won Manda Restaurant in nearby Seongsan-dong, Parktung's pick.
I was a little taken aback by the smaller interior (10 seats, including two low tables) as I entered. The tables were spaced closely together, and the size was small.
I tried to sit where I wanted, but they kindly offered me another seat, so I settled in.
The kimchi was served as a side dish, and the accompanying radish kimchi and bean sprout salad were quite appetizing, raising my anticipation.
They told me I could eat the dumplings once they started boiling, so I grabbed one. The heat hadn't reached the center, but I remembered they'd already steamed the dumplings for the hot pot, so I ate them anyway.
I guess they boil the cabbage and clams together when they make the broth, so the cabbage was well-cooked. The clams looked quite firm, but I couldn't taste the distinct clam flavor.
After eating, I felt like I'd had a pretty healthy meal. It's mild, but the chili peppers are a bit spicy. However, I left out the overcooked chili peppers because they were a bit tough.
The food was delicious, and while the interior is cramped, where you might have to sit shoulder to shoulder with someone else, I'd definitely visit again.
The only downside was that I couldn't get the seat I wanted, and the service was a bit lacking.
