Hwangjaebeol

Hwangjaebeol was the most delicious octopus dish I've ever had in my life. Tastes are universal, so I guess everyone else has the same opinion. I barely made it in on my first visit, but the always-long lines have kept me from returning. The signature menu is simple: eel and octopus. I'm not a fan of eel, so I ordered the octopus marinated in seasoned sauce. I put off the salted sauce for later, but it hasn't arrived yet. Once again, I've always had octopus stir-fried with vegetables, seasoned with homemade sauce, but this place focuses on grilled octopus. I took a bite of the well-cooked, marinated octopus and it was absolutely delicious. I even wondered if grilling over an open flame was the correct way to prepare octopus. It's quite spicy, reminiscent of mayonnaise. However, mayonnaise isn't provided, so you have to buy it yourself or bring it with you. There's even a sign posted inside the restaurant that says so. (This is probably a good deal.) I also ordered steamed eggs and rice balls. The steamed eggs were cooked perfectly in a clay pot, and the top was soft and half-boiled, giving them a rich, melty texture like cheese. I watched the ladies at the next table grill the rice balls, and I copied them. It's always packed, and the tables are closely spaced, so it's a bit distracting, but it's truly delicious. You can avoid the wait by going around 5 p.m. I definitely want to visit again someday. The food was delicious.
