Japanese cuisine has deep roots in Seoul, shaped by geographic proximity and a long shared history. Seoul-style Japanese restaurants range from affordable sushi conveyor belts and ramen shops to high-end omakase counters. Quality fish is flown in daily, and Korean chefs often put their own spin on Japanese classics — thicker broths, spicier condiments, and seasonal Korean ingredients woven into traditional recipes.
Jongno-gu is the historic heart of Seoul, containing Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village, and Insadong's antique street. The area balances ancient and modern — traditional Korean restaurants, teahouses, and street food vendors operate alongside contemporary galleries and specialty coffee shops. Eating here feels like a connection to centuries of Seoul food culture.

When you enter Gwangjang Market, or when you enter any food market, you're overwhelmed by the colors and the smells and you wanna try everything... 🤩 Scratch that, I remember a market in Bangkok where I was overwhelmed by the smell of durian and that made me wanna leave! 🤢 Anyway, when we went to Gwangjang Market, one of the first stalls we saw was 은성회집 Eunseonghoe House which, as its name does not show, mainly offered... soup. Outside of the stall, there were piles of big buckets of fish, tofu (probably?) and veggies, or veggies, roe and something we didn't recognize. Of course, if there's something we've never seen, this is what we wanna try! 🙌 We still kept on walking around, we even had lunch somewhere else, but then my wife insisted on going back and having that soup. It was very cold that day and she needed something hot. Also she had a fight with our son that day so she didn't mind eating something he wouldn't like! 🤣 And you know me, I don't mind eating twice if that means trying something new! 😋 As opposed to the central stalls in the market, this one exclusively is full of locals. I even think the staff was surprised to see us come in, TBH. 😅 We had no clue about how to eat that soup so a guest at the table next to us took our chopsticks and prepared it for us. If we had let him, I'm pretty sure he would have fed us... 😅 That was strange at first, but that's the kind of experience I enjoy the most, when people genuinely enjoy sharing their lifestyle, culture, traditions with me and I enjoy learning from them. 🙏 About the soup, honestly, not much to say, it was ok but not extremely tasty and... I still don't know what we ate 😅 (raw, below the roes on the 1st pic / cooked on the 3rd one)... So if anybody knows, please, feel free to add a comment. 🙏 For this soup, we paid KRW 28K (€18)... we ate 2 but could have been 4, easily! 👍 Quality & taste: 6/10 Quantities: 10/10 Atmosphere: 9/10 Originality: 10/10 Ratio price / quality: 9/10 Service: 6/10 How I felt afterwards: 8/10
