Dongdaemun-gu is a 24-hour neighbourhood defined by its massive fashion markets, which draw wholesale buyers and night shoppers around the clock. The food scene is fast, cheap, and designed for people who eat at unconventional hours — naengmyeon restaurants that open at midnight, pojangmacha that come alive at 3am, and kalguksu shops that have served the same recipe for fifty years.

View all →On a day when the winter rain soaked the earth and chilled the air, I made my way into the vibrant labyrinth of Gyeongdong Market's underground arcade. Guided by a body shivering from the cold, I arrived at 'Andong-jip,' a place where a rustic yet warm consolation—built of time and devotion rather than flashy techniques—awaited me. The Son-guksi (Hand-kneaded Noodles) here is honest. Instead of dazzling the palate with intense seasoning, it reveals the nutty aroma of dough mixed with soybean powder and the subtle depth of anchovy broth. The clean, plain flavor infused in every strand of noodle calmed my mind with every chew. The accompanying Baechu-jeon (Cabbage Pancake) was the highlight of the meal. Despite being pan-fried in oil, it retained the natural sweetness and refreshing juice of the cabbage, coating the mouth with a clean finish. The unadorned, protein-rich purity of the ingredients harmonized with the melancholy of the winter rain, completing what felt like a truly bountiful table. In an era of extravagant gastronomy, the food at Andong-jip seems to ask us: isn't true flavor ultimately about returning to the essence? That meal shared on a rainy winter day was more than just sustenance; it was a tender warmth that helps one endure the biting season.
I loved the bibimbap so much with the pork as sharing dish. This is the best bibimbap I have ever had. The colors, combination, taste and portion are just so nice with the bean sprout soup. The lady boss also quite friendly and able to speak Chinese very well. We have it as a breakfast. We discovered it accidentally at the underground after failing to find a large area of food court. So, it is really lucky to have my meal here.
This shop is at the basement of the market. We went around 3pm on a weekday, no queue and instantly we got seated. We did not get to see auntie omakase at this timing, but the other staff were friendly and attentive to replenish our side dish without us asking. Noodles broth was awesome and the boiled pork was good too!
