When looking for a great BBQ restaurant near Gangnam Station, there are countless options, but finding a place that truly leaves a lasting impression on you can be challenging. My recent visit to Kiun Gangnam Station Main Branch was quite satisfying.
Kiun Gangnam Station Main Branch is often mentioned as a charcoal-grilled pork restaurant in the Yeoksam-dong area, and it's also a popular spot for wedding invitations and company dinners. The clean and calm atmosphere of the exterior made it easy to enter, even for first-time visitors. The interior, with its well-spaced tables, feels like a perfect gathering place.
The most distinctive feature of this restaurant is its use of Binchotan charcoal, the highest quality charcoal. From the moment the grill ignited, I sensed a subtle aroma distinct from regular charcoal. This aroma naturally permeated the meat, bringing out its natural, meaty flavor. Even among Gangnam Station barbecue restaurants, this level of attention to charcoal is rare, so my expectations were high from the first impression.
The menu is well-divided into sets and a la carte options, making it easy to choose. On this day, I ordered the Sulgiun Set and Doenjang Jjigae (soybean paste stew). The Sulgiun Set includes galbi samgyeopsal (short rib pork belly), hangjeongsal (portion of pork belly), gabrisal (portion of pork belly), and assorted vegetables, making it a great way to enjoy a variety of cuts at once. It's the perfect set to satisfy a variety of tastes, especially at a drinking party or gathering.
Giun's signature dish, the galbi samgyeopsal (pork belly), is aged with the bone and prepared in-house. The meaty aroma that wafted from the grill was instantly palatable, and with each bite, the rich, savory flavor filled my mouth. While not overly fatty, the meat retained its flavor with each bite, making it a highly recommended choice for anyone looking for a delicious samgyeopsal experience near Gangnam Station.
The hangjeongsal (portion of pork belly) had a perfect ratio of fat to lean meat. Slowly grilled over charcoal, the outside was crispy and the inside was moist, and the pork jowl meat's unique savory flavor blended well with the charcoal aroma. The meat itself was so well-cooked that it was satisfying even without any sauce, just a pinch of salt.
The Gabrisal was impressive for its juicy yet light flavor. The texture was vibrant, giving it a nice chew, and its lack of greasiness made it easy to mix with other cuts. I felt it was a great dish to balance out the meal.
The soybean paste stew I ordered alongside was a pork-based stew style, with a clean vegetable base. The broth, made with whole radish, whole onion, and green onion, combined with the savory pork flavor, created a deep, yet not overpowering flavor. It's a great side dish to enjoy between meals or as a meal-ending dish.
Overall, the main branch of Kiun Gangnam Station gave me the strong impression of a Gangnam-area barbecue restaurant that prioritizes quality meat and basics over flashy details. I think it's a great place for a variety of gatherings, whether for company dinners, get-togethers, or wedding invitations. If you're looking to truly enjoy charcoal-grilled pork in Gangnam, we recommend visiting along with the Soolgiun Set.
