About 한식

Korean cuisine (hansik) is built around balance — fermented sides (banchan), a steaming bowl of rice, and a main dish that changes with the season. Meals are served all at once rather than in courses, and sharing dishes at the table is the norm. The depth of flavor comes from slow-fermented pastes like doenjang (soybean) and gochujang (chili), which form the backbone of soups, stews, and marinades across the country.

About Jung-Gu

Jung-gu sits at the geographic and commercial center of Seoul, encompassing Myeongdong (K-beauty and street food), Namdaemun Market, and the financial district. The food here spans the full range — from tourist-facing street stalls in Myeongdong to understated lunch joints serving office workers, and traditional Korean restaurants that have operated for decades without needing to advertise.

Exit Exit 1 of Jongno 3-ga Station (Line 1). Continue up Songhae Street and you'll reach the Nagwon Shopping Center building. (It's right across the street from Exit 5 of Jongno 3-ga Station (Line 5). Turn right of the building and you'll reach a narrow alleyway lined with restaurants. A frequent eateries frequent Gangwon-do House, where the host of National Singing Contest often stops by for a meal. Sundae soup costs 5,000 won per person, and you pay before you enter. There's no phone number. It's relatively clean and tidy, but if you prefer a more neat and tidy environment, I recommend skipping it. It's great value for money, and the food is delicious. I visited with a friend on March 11, 2025, and had the sundae ttarogukbap, but it wasn't as good as it used to be. The price of sundae ttarogukbap went up from 5,000 won to 8,000 won, and I wish the taste had stayed the same.

The broth isn't seasoned, so you can adjust the flavor to your liking by adding shrimp paste, a daedaegi (Korean fermented skate), or a couple of chopped Cheongyang peppers. The broth is clean and lacks any seasoning, so those accustomed to the spiciness of sundaeguk might find it bland. I prefer a bland diet, so I skip the daedaegi and just chop a couple of Cheongyang peppers into the clear broth. The meat is large, so adding a single serving of shrimp paste is perfect. The alcohol goes down smoothly. The head meat is high quality and comes in four or five cuts for 15,000 won. It's incredibly light and delicious. The liver and lungs, served in the afternoon, are enough to easily drink up a bottle of soju. The staff is friendly and the prices are reasonable, so I plan to visit this place for a long time.

April 17, 2025 It was a little after 10 AM. My mood was really down after my phone was stolen the day before, and I didn't have much of an appetite, but Dwaeji Gukbap is really delicious. It's perfect the day after drinking. I wish they had it in Japan, but even if they did, I wonder if it would become popular.
