How to Use This Tour Guide

This guide splits the Dongdaemun and Sindang corridor into two half-day courses. Course A covers the morning — vintage shopping at Dongmyo, a walk along Cheonggyecheon stream, and a Michelin Bib Gourmand vegan lunch in Sindang. Course B continues in the afternoon — Zaha Hadid's DDP landmark and the original tteokbokki alley that started it all. Each stop includes subway directions from three major starting points in Seoul: Myeongdong, Gangnam, and Hongdae.

You can follow both courses in a single day, or do Course A on its own as a half-day trip. After lunch at Gosari Express, Sindang station connects directly back to all major areas — making it a natural exit point if you want the afternoon free. Plan to start Course A by 10:00 for the best experience at Dongmyo.

Course A: Jongno-gu & Jung-gu — Vintage Market, Stream Walk & Lunch

The morning course starts in Jongno-gu at Dongmyo, one of Seoul's oldest flea markets, then follows the Cheonggyecheon stream path east into Jung-gu before finishing with a Michelin Bib Gourmand vegan lunch at Gosari Express in Sindang-dong. The three stops are connected by short subway hops and are entirely at a relaxed, unhurried pace.

📍 Stop 1: Dongmyo Flea Market (동묘 벼룩시장)

Known for: Seoul's largest vintage and second-hand market; top pick for retro fashion, antiques, and street photography

Dongmyo Flea Market (Dongmyo Beureuksi Jang, 동묘 벼룩시장) sprawls across the streets around Dongmyo station and spills into the surrounding lanes of Changsin-dong. Unlike the curated vintage stores of Hongdae or Mapo, Dongmyo is unfiltered and genuinely old — decades of military surplus jackets, 1980s electronics, ceramic ware, embroidered tablecloths, and vinyl records all pile together in open-air stalls. Locals call it Seoul's best antique hunting ground, and it has earned a devoted following among younger Koreans looking for retro fashion at prices that can't be matched anywhere else in the city. Budget around ₩5,000–30,000 for clothing finds; rare items and antiques climb higher. Cash is expected at most stalls.

📸 Photo Spot: The densest stall corridor runs along the wall of Dongmyo shrine (동묘). Shoot into the rows of hanging garments with the shrine gate framed in the background — best in morning light before 11:00.

⏱ Suggested Time: 1–1.5 hours

Getting There:

  • From Myeongdong: Line 4 → Dongdaemun (4 stops, ~8 min) → transfer Line 6 → Dongmyo (1 stop, ~3 min). Exit 3. Total: ~15 min
  • From Gangnam: Line 2 → Sindang (11 stops, ~20 min) → transfer Line 6 → Dongmyo (2 stops, ~5 min). Exit 3. Total: ~30 min
  • From Hongdae: Line 2 → Sindang (12 stops, ~22 min) → transfer Line 6 → Dongmyo (2 stops, ~5 min). Exit 3. Total: ~30 min

🚶 Next Stop: Line 1 two stops south to Dongdaemun, Exit 8 → walk to the stream (5 min) →

📍 Stop 2: Cheonggyecheon Stream (청계천)

Known for: Seoul's landmark urban restoration project; a peaceful 11km walking corridor through the heart of the city

Cheonggyecheon (Cheonggyecheon, 청계천) is a restored urban stream that cuts through central Seoul from Gwanghwamun to the Han River. What is now a leafy walking corridor was once a covered highway; the 2005 restoration became a symbol of Seoul's urban transformation. The stretch between Dongdaemun and DDP is quieter than the tourist-heavy western end near City Hall, and the stone-paved banks feel almost removed from the city above. Public art installations appear at intervals along the path. Spring brings cherry blossoms along the upper banks; summer keeps the stone path cool in the shade. There is no admission and no closing time.

📸 Photo Spot: The Igansumun waterway gate (이간수문) near DDP is a well-preserved section of Seoul's old city wall integrated into the stream bank — a striking contrast of old stone against the steel-and-glass surroundings.

⏱ Suggested Time: 30–60 minutes

Getting There:

  • From Myeongdong: Line 4 → Dongdaemun (4 stops, ~8 min). Exit 8 leads directly to the stream
  • From Gangnam: Line 2 → Euljiro 1-ga (11 stops, ~20 min). Exit 3 leads to the stream entrance
  • From Hongdae: Line 2 → Euljiro 1-ga (12 stops, ~22 min). Exit 3 leads to the stream entrance

🚶 Next Stop: Line 2 or 4 from Dongdaemun → Sindang, Exit 4 (~10 min) →

📍 Stop 3: Gosari Express (고사리익스프레스) — Michelin Bib Gourmand

Featured in: Michelin Guide Seoul (Bib Gourmand); one of Seoul's most recognized vegan Korean restaurants

Gosari Express (Gosari Ikseupeureseu, 고사리익스프레스) is one of Seoul's most talked-about vegan restaurants and one of a small handful to earn a Michelin Bib Gourmand distinction for exceptional value. The menu is built entirely around traditional Korean temple food (사찰음식) — no meat, no dairy, no pungent alliums — with gosari (bracken fern) as the signature ingredient. Dishes like gosari-bibimbap and seasonal vegetable namul sets arrive in careful, modest portions that read like quiet arguments for the depth of Korean plant-based cooking. The dining room is small and reservations are not taken; arriving at opening (11:30 on weekdays) avoids the longest queues. Budget around ₩12,000–18,000 per person. Closed on Mondays.

📸 Photo Spot: The bibimbap bowl presentation is photogenic — vivid greens and earthy browns against the stone bowl. Natural light from the front window is best for table shots.

⏱ Suggested Time: 1 hour (including wait time)

Getting There:

  • From Myeongdong: Line 4 → Dongdaemun → Line 2 → Sindang (2 stops total, ~12 min). Exit 4
  • From Gangnam: Line 2 direct → Sindang (11 stops, ~20 min). Exit 4
  • From Hongdae: Line 2 direct → Sindang (12 stops, ~22 min). Exit 4

🚶 Next Stop: Line 2 one stop west to Dongdaemun History & Culture Park, Exit 1 (~3 min) →

Half-Day Option — End the Tour After Lunch

Course A — Dongmyo, Cheonggyecheon, and Gosari Express — is a complete half-day on its own. If you want the afternoon free, Sindang station (Lines 2 & 6) connects directly back to all major areas:

  • To Myeongdong: Line 2 → City Hall (~5 min) → transfer Line 4 → Myeongdong (1 stop, ~3 min). Total: ~12 min
  • To Gangnam: Line 2 westbound direct → Gangnam (11 stops, ~20 min)
  • To Hongdae: Line 2 westbound direct → Hongdae Entrance (12 stops, ~22 min)

Course B: Jung-gu — Architecture & Street Food

The afternoon course stays in Jung-gu and covers two of Seoul's most iconic destinations: the futuristic DDP landmark and the original tteokbokki alley of Sindang-dong. Both stops are within walking distance of each other, and the whole course finishes back at Sindang station. Start Course B from 14:00 — DDP is also spectacular after dark when the LED installations come on.

📍 Stop 4: Dongdaemun Design Plaza — DDP (동대문디자인플라자)

Featured in: My Love from the Star, Heirs, Doctor Stranger; recognized globally as one of the most distinctive buildings in East Asia

The Dongdaemun Design Plaza (Dongdaemun Dijain Peullaja, 동대문디자인플라자), universally known as DDP, is one of the most recognisable buildings in East Asia. Designed by the late architect Zaha Hadid and completed in 2014, the structure is a continuous wave of brushed aluminium panels that seems to defy the flat logic of its surroundings. The 86,574 square metre complex contains exhibition halls, a design museum, a curated marketplace of Korean design goods, and a large outdoor plaza where free cultural events take place on weekends. The plaza is open at all hours; the LED rose garden installation along the outer wall is best seen after dark. Paid exhibitions rotate every few months. Admission to the plaza and outdoor areas is always free.

📸 Photo Spot: The curved silver exterior photographed from the open plaza at blue hour (30 min after sunset) when the LED lighting activates. The underpass tunnel connecting to the old stadium wall works well at any time of day.

⏱ Suggested Time: 1–2 hours

Getting There:

  • From Myeongdong: Line 4 direct → Dongdaemun History & Culture Park (3 stops, ~8 min). Exit 1
  • From Gangnam: Line 2 direct → Dongdaemun History & Culture Park (11 stops, ~25 min). Exit 1
  • From Hongdae: Line 2 direct → Dongdaemun History & Culture Park (12 stops, ~28 min). Exit 1

🚶 Next Stop: Walk southeast along Dasan-ro (~12 min), or Line 2 one stop east to Sindang, Exit 8 →

📍 Stop 5: Sindang-dong Tteokbokki Town (신당동 떡볶이 타운)

Known for: The birthplace of modern tteokbokki in Seoul; a dedicated alley of family-run restaurants serving the original maboklim-style spicy rice cakes since the 1950s

Sindang-dong Tteokbokki Town (Sindang-dong Tteokbokki Taun, 신당동 떡볶이 타운) is the neighbourhood credited with popularising the dish that became Korea's defining street food. The original maboklim tteokbokki (마복림 떡볶이) served here is distinct from the street-stall versions found elsewhere in Seoul: thicker rice cakes simmered in a deeply savoury gochujang broth alongside fish cake, glass noodles, and egg, cooked at the table in a wide shallow pan. The alley is lined with restaurants that have been operating for decades — some managed by the same families since the 1950s. Prices are low, portions are large, and the atmosphere after dark, when the alley lights up and the outdoor seating fills, is one of the most distinctly local experiences in central Seoul. Budget around ₩8,000–12,000 per person.

📸 Photo Spot: The alley entrance sign and rows of lit restaurant frontages at dusk make for strong wide shots. Inside, the bubbling tteokbokki pan is a classic — ask before photographing at any restaurant.

⏱ Suggested Time: 1 hour

Getting There:

  • From Myeongdong: Line 4 → Dongdaemun → Line 2 → Sindang (~12 min). Exit 8
  • From Gangnam: Line 2 direct → Sindang (11 stops, ~20 min). Exit 8
  • From Hongdae: Line 2 direct → Sindang (12 stops, ~22 min). Exit 8

🚶 End of Tour: Sindang station (Lines 2 & 6) connects back to Hongdae (Line 2, ~20 min), Gangnam (Line 2, ~20 min), or Myeongdong (Line 2 → City Hall → Line 4, ~12 min).

Tips for First-Time Visitors

  • Start early at Dongmyo: The best vintage finds go fast. Arriving before 10:30 gives you first pick before tour groups arrive, and the market energy is at its peak in the morning.
  • Gosari Express is closed on Mondays: Plan your visit for Tuesday through Sunday. The lunch service (11:30–15:00) fills up quickly — arrive at opening or expect a short queue.
  • DDP is free to enter and explore: The outdoor plaza and ground-level corridors cost nothing. Paid exhibitions are optional; even a walk around the exterior at dusk is worth the trip.
  • Sindang tteokbokki is a full meal, not a snack: The maboklim style is richer and heavier than street-stall versions — cooked at the table in a wide pan. Come hungry and plan it as dinner.
  • T-money card covers all transit on this route: Lines 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 are all within Seoul Metro's standard fare zone. Each ride costs ₩1,400–1,600. See the full guide: How to Get Around Korea.
