Seongdong-gu's Seongsu-dong has transformed from an industrial zone into Seoul's most talked-about food and culture district. Nicknamed 'Seoul's Brooklyn,' it hosts artisan roasters, pop-up restaurants, and concept cafés in renovated factories alongside high-end boutiques. The food scene rewards curiosity — the best spots are often down an alleyway or behind an unmarked door.
If you want to experience something a little more luxurious in Korea, I honestly think you have to try omakase at least once. Of course it’s not traditional Korean food, but personally, I felt the quality and taste were even better than the omakase I had in Japan. Compared to the omakase I recently had in Tokyo, this was much more affordable, served almost twice as many dishes, and every course was amazing. I came to Sushi Dokugen for my friend’s birthday because we wanted a fancy dinner experience. It’s reservation-only and they only take around 10 guests per session, so you definitely need to book in advance. There were about 25 courses in total, and every single one was incredible. The flow of the meal was so carefully planned, and the chef explained each dish as it was served. It genuinely felt like a luxury dining experience from start to finish. The seafood and sushi were unbelievably fresh. These are the kinds of premium ingredients that are hard to experience outside of omakase, and everything literally melted in my mouth. We had highballs this time, but next time I definitely want to try it with sake. The sake prices were surprisingly reasonable too. If you’re planning a date night or looking for a special dinner spot, I really recommend this place. Getting this level of food and service for around $50 per person honestly feels unreal. There were also foreign guests during our seating, and while the English service may not be perfect, the chef still explained everything kindly in English, so don’t feel nervous about visiting. I wish my friends had birthdays every week 🎂🍣🥃
Honestly didn’t know what to expect walking in, but this place completely won me over. The biggest thing? Every single piece of nigiri was already seasoned perfectly. I never once reached for the soy sauce not because I forgot, but because it genuinely didn’t need it. That alone tells you a lot about the level of craft here. The chef seasons each piece so the fish and rice just… work together. It sounds simple but it’s surprisingly rare. And for 25 courses? The value is kind of insane. You’d easily pay this much (or more) elsewhere for half the experience. The kaiseki courses in between kept things interesting warm, seasonal dishes that gave you a breather between the nigiri without ever losing momentum. The vibe is quiet and intimate, staff check in just enough without hovering, and the pacing felt genuinely considered rather than rushed to turn the table. If you’re on the fence about omakase in Seoul, this is a really good place to start or to come back to.
