Yongsan-gu contains Itaewon — Seoul's most international neighbourhood — as well as the scenic Hannam district and Yongsan Electronics Market. Itaewon's food scene reflects its global community: Indian, Middle Eastern, African, and American restaurants share streets with high-end Korean and Japanese establishments. It's also where many of Seoul's foreign chefs have set up their most ambitious projects.
I visited on a public holiday evening in October 2024. It's located in an alleyway inside Jjae-neuni, so you'll have to be careful to find it. At first, the interior and exterior of the restaurant looked like a modern, trendy place, not an old-fashioned tteokbokki restaurant or bar, so I was a little skeptical, but I heard they'd moved. Since white tteokbokki is their signature dish, it was a must-have for every set menu. The set menus also included various side dishes, including pork and chicken gizzards. The white tteokbokki was sweet and slightly spicy, perfectly balanced. The texture of the rice cakes was excellent, and the broth paired well with drinks. The chicken gizzards also had a nice, salty texture. I'd love to visit again.
The store has gotten so much prettier since I moved. The white tteokbokki is still delicious, but the owner is still rude. I think it would be better for both of us to just cut back on the conversation! Still, I think I'll go for the white tteokbokki and soju.
