Jongno-gu is the historic heart of Seoul, containing Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village, and Insadong's antique street. The area balances ancient and modern — traditional Korean restaurants, teahouses, and street food vendors operate alongside contemporary galleries and specialty coffee shops. Eating here feels like a connection to centuries of Seoul food culture.
EATTasty chicken soup with an entire chicken in the soup, served just like a hotpot style. The chicken was tender and extra ingredients can be ordered to add onto the soup. We did not try the glutinous rice, but had noodles instead. The lady staff who served us speaks pretty good Mandarin as well and explained how the sauce is to be mixed and ways to enjoy the meal.
I went to Dongdaemun to eat Dakhanmari. There’s a famous restaurant next door that always has a long line, but I didn’t feel like waiting, so I chose this place instead. I got in smoothly, but it quickly filled up and was soon packed. Most of the customers were locals, with very few tourists. We were told that one whole chicken must be ordered per two people. The Dakhanmari had a light and gentle flavor, but adding extra soy sauce and garlic made it taste even better. It was a hot day, and the restaurant was quite warm inside, I was sweating while eating. Next time, I’d love to come back when the weather is cooler.
A pot of piping hot chicken soup with assortments of mushroom, potato and greens after a day of skiing is heaven sent. Place was full packed but it didn’t have to wait long for a table for my dinner. In no time, I became a Seoulite devouring the entire chicken. For newbies like me, been advised NOT to cook whole portions of the noodles (ordered add on) into the pot. Rather, place your serving of noodles in a bowl and scoop the soup into the bowl. Add seasoning for the initial scoops of soup (won’t have thicken yet for taste). Fantastic meal. Don’t be expecting a quiet meal for you’ll have to speak over the din when the soju talks. Truth be, I could have devoured 2 whole chicken if I were not rushing for time.
