Seodaemun-gu houses Sinchon and Ewha — university neighborhoods known for affordable food, vibrant nightlife, and a youthful dining culture. The area is dense with budget-friendly Korean restaurants, late-night delivery options, and cafés that stay open until the early hours. It's a neighbourhood where eating well on a student budget is entirely achievable.
This place has really good ganjjajang and fried dumplings. The skin is a bit thick, but the handmade fried dumplings are filling and delicious. Unlike many Chinese restaurants that only call their ganjjajang "ganjjajang" and mix in pre-made jjajang, this place stir-fries it fresh to order. It's not too salty and has just the right amount of sweetness, making it a well-made and delicious ganjjajang that almost everyone will enjoy. The mussel jjamppong is also tasty, but the broth is quite oily and heavy, so I don't like it.
Despite being 25 years old, it still has a long-established atmosphere. Today, I had the Mesang-i Jjamppong, but the other dishes were also good.
This Chinese restaurant, located next to the Seodaemun District Office, boasts over 35 years of history. While the entrance façade might appeal to those who appreciate a more traditional Chinese restaurant, younger women who prefer a more clean and minimalist setting might find it disappointing. The most important factor, however, is the taste. The jjambbong (spicy noodle soup) in the winter is highly recommended. The handmade dumplings are a real highlight. The jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles) is a classic, so those who prefer the sweeter jjajangmyeon found in modern franchises might find it less appealing. They also offer a menu item rarely seen at typical Chinese restaurants, such as the spicy meat fried rice. This is a well-stir-fried rice dish with a subtle spiciness, perfect paired with the jjajang sauce and jjambbong broth. Despite being in Seoul, prices feel more affordable than in southern Gyeonggi Province, so if you're looking for a delicious and affordable meal in the Seodaemun District Office area, this is a must-visit!
