Korean cuisine (hansik) is built around balance — fermented sides (banchan), a steaming bowl of rice, and a main dish that changes with the season. Meals are served all at once rather than in courses, and sharing dishes at the table is the norm. The depth of flavor comes from slow-fermented pastes like doenjang (soybean) and gochujang (chili), which form the backbone of soups, stews, and marinades across the country.
Dongdaemun-gu is a 24-hour neighbourhood defined by its massive fashion markets, which draw wholesale buyers and night shoppers around the clock. The food scene is fast, cheap, and designed for people who eat at unconventional hours — naengmyeon restaurants that open at midnight, pojangmacha that come alive at 3am, and kalguksu shops that have served the same recipe for fifty years.
This is the most chill and welcoming restaurant I’ve ever been to. It’s always so calm and nice to be here. The staff are so kind! And the food… I could eat it every day. Even the side dishes are amazing!!! 🤤 I also love the decor with the anime figures 💕 I always leave this restaurant with a smile on my face and my stomach happy. I want to come here every day!
It's a bit pricey, but it's still worth it. The rib side dish that comes with the set meal is delicious.
For 16,000 won, you can have galbitang, two galbijjim (braised short ribs), side dishes, salad, and grapefruit tea... This is not Kim Hye-ja, but Go Hye-ja! This galbitang restaurant is located just a minute from Dapsimni Station. They boil their meat fresh every morning, and, despite being a chain restaurant, they make their own "homemade recipes" on-site. For 16,000 won, they offer a set meal of galbitang, two galbijjim (braised short ribs), side dishes, and salad. It's already a popular restaurant in the neighborhood and has been a top-rated delivery restaurant for three years, so the place was bustling with delivery riders while we were eating. The galbitang is cooked thoroughly in a clear, rich broth, and the tender ribs fall off without any effort. It's amazing. I rolled up some rice and topped it with kimchi, and it was delicious. (I don't like to roll rice because it makes the rice swell, but it was still delicious.) The japchae, kimchi, and salad that came with it were all especially delicious. The spicy galbijjim came with two shrimp on top, and even though it was cooked thoroughly, the ribs were tender and the mushrooms were tender. It's so spicy that it'll make your tongue tap dance for those who love spicy food. 💃🏻 I'm a spicy foodie, so it's like tai chi! 🤸🏻 And you can't miss the fried rice. Putting the leftover meat and shrimp on top gave it a rich, delicious K-paella vibe. 🍊 As I was about to pay and leave, they offered me grapefruit tea, saying they didn't know many people there. It was refreshing and really helped ease my stomach after a heavy meal. The value for money is great, so give it a try.
