Bunsik — Korean street-food snacks — evolved as affordable, filling fare for students and workers after the Korean War. Tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), kimbap (seaweed rice rolls), sundae (blood sausage), and odeng (fish cake skewers in broth) are the staples. Most bunsik restaurants are fast, casual, and open late, making them a go-to for a quick hot meal at any hour.
Dobong-gu in northern Seoul is a predominantly residential district adjacent to Dobongsan Mountain. The local food scene centres on community restaurants and street food vendors rather than tourist-facing establishments, offering an authentic view of how Seoul residents actually eat on a daily basis.
We came here for lunch, tteokbokki. It feels like it's been almost 10 years since I've been here, but the traces of time are still there! We ordered the MT Special, and the tteokbokki was filled with sausage, egg, glass noodles, ramen, rice cakes, fish cakes, cabbage, bean sprouts, carrots, and more! The seasoning wasn't overly spicy, but rather spicy enough to build up as you eat. It wasn't the kind of spiciness that leaves your mouth feeling tingly afterward. We also ordered fried rice, which had a slice of cheese and finely chopped kimchi. It really felt like a Korean dessert! Parking: There's a parking lot behind the building, but it's a bit cramped. If you're looking for some instant tteokbokki in Gongneung-dong, this is a highly recommended option!
The price was higher than I expected. The taste wasn't anything special. The set of sari was 18,000 won. Add yaki (spicy rice), add japchae roll, and a cola for 23,000 won. I skipped the fried rice.
