Overview
Sindang-dong Tteokbokki Town is a place where tteokbokki shops line both sides of the alley. The alley began to form in the late 1970s, and with the transition to the 1980s, Sindang-dong Tteokbokki Alley entered its heyday. In the 1980s, DJ boxes were newly introduced at tteokbokki restaurants. The so-called stylish DJ oppa who played music along with the story has become a symbol of Sindang-dong's tteokbokki alley. This period was also the golden age of high school baseball, and on days when Deoksu High School and Sunrin Commercial High School played at the nearby Dongdaemun Baseball Stadium, the Tteokbokki Alley in Sindang-dong would be overflowing with students. This alley is exactly where children who were students at the time come to middle age. They have been regulars for over twenty years, and because of their tradition, they have been designated as Seoul Future Heritage sites. In fact, the history of Tteokbokki Alley goes far further than the 1970s, back to the 1950s. In the tteokbokki alley, there is Ma Bok-rim Grandma's House, and according to her, she started selling tteokbokki in 1953. At first, tteokbokki was made with just gochujang, and the Sindang-dong tteokbokki that began over decades has become a perfect meal rather than a refreshing snack. These days, tteokbokki includes eggs, glass noodles, fish cakes, chewy noodles, and ramen noodles, and even includes squid, shrimp, and cheese to attract new tastes.
