Overview
For over 30 years, the smell of boiling cod soup has lingered in Samgakji. Daegu soup, considered the best hangover soup, first established itself in Samgakji in 1979. Since then, four Daegu Soup restaurants around Woori Bank in Samgakji have been thriving. Cod soup has a deep broth, attracting enthusiasts, with more regulars being older than young. Many people who had drunk the night before come to relieve hangovers, and after hiking or exercising, some gather in small groups to enjoy cod soup and soju. Older customers often become regulars due to the deep broth, leading to gatherings at cod soup restaurants. In this way, regular regulars at Samgakji Cod Soup Alley find a place that suits their taste, share heartwarming conversations, and build up their taste. If you exit at Exit 14 of Samgakji Station on Subway Line 6 or Exit 1 of Samgakji Station on Line 4, you'll find Woori Bank, and in front of it is a restaurant in Pyongyang. In the back alley of the Pyongyang house, there are Wondaegutang and Gyeongwon Daegudang. These restaurants are old houses. At the entrance of that alley, there is a chamdaegu soup restaurant. Sechang Daegu Soup is on the left side of the road if you follow the road behind Woori Bank. The Daegu Soup Alley became famous purely thanks to the soldiers. There used to be many soldiers around Samgakji from the Army Headquarters and other offices, who became regular regulars, and as they showed their taste to colleagues gathering from all over the country, the flavor spread nationwide. Also, due to the nature of soldiers who often transfer or be dispatched, regular regulars returning after a long time after away from home often eat a bowl of Samgakji cod soup before returning to their units. That's why in this Daegudang Alley, a place is created where retired soldiers come to share the taste with their grandchildren. Cod soup is made with a cool, deep flavor from the cod itself, so it doesn't use any special broth; there was even a time when broth was made with pollock. In this alley, there is cod soup made by boiling bean sprouts and water parsley until bright and spicy, as well as cod soup served in a clear broth.
