Korean cuisine (hansik) is built around balance — fermented sides (banchan), a steaming bowl of rice, and a main dish that changes with the season. Meals are served all at once rather than in courses, and sharing dishes at the table is the norm. The depth of flavor comes from slow-fermented pastes like doenjang (soybean) and gochujang (chili), which form the backbone of soups, stews, and marinades across the country.

After returning from overseas, I was craving a spicy soup, so I went to Whale Gamjatang. When I think of Korean food, I can't help but think of gamjatang, and the spicy broth here was exquisite.
First of all, the broth had a rich pork bone flavor, combined with a spicy chili sauce, and it felt incredibly comforting. With one sip, my body felt warm and all the fatigue I'd accumulated over the years seemed to melt away. The potatoes were cooked thoroughly, making them easy to scoop up with a spoon, and the meat was tender and perfectly cooked, making it easy to eat in one bite.
The side dishes were also delicious, but the kimchi was especially delicious. Adding kimchi to the soup enhanced the spiciness, making it even more delicious. Overall, the portions were generous, leaving me feeling full. It was such a satisfying experience that I'm eager to return when the weather gets cooler.
Here's the review of Whale Gamjatang in English:
After returning from overseas, I was craving something spicy, so I decided to visit Whale Gamjatang. Korean food wouldn’t be complete without a good bowl of Gamjatang, and this place didn’t disappoint. The spicy broth was absolutely delicious.
The broth had a rich, deep pork flavor, enhanced with spicy pepper seasoning that immediately warmed me up. Just one spoonful made me feel relaxed, as if all my travel fatigue was melting away. The potatoes were perfectly cooked, soft enough to scoop with a spoon, and the meat was tender and easy to eat.
The side dishes were also a treat, especially the kimchi. When I paired it with the broth, the spiciness intensified, making it even more enjoyable. The portions were generous, so I left feeling quite full. It was such a satisfying meal that I’d love to visit again when the weather gets cooler.
Next time, I might try some other menu items. I definitely recommend Whale Gamjatang if you’re ever craving something spicy and comforting!
