Korean cuisine (hansik) is built around balance — fermented sides (banchan), a steaming bowl of rice, and a main dish that changes with the season. Meals are served all at once rather than in courses, and sharing dishes at the table is the norm. The depth of flavor comes from slow-fermented pastes like doenjang (soybean) and gochujang (chili), which form the backbone of soups, stews, and marinades across the country.
Nowon-gu in northeastern Seoul is a large residential district known for its community-focused dining culture. Local restaurants here serve the kinds of meals families eat daily — doenjang jjigae, guk-based soups, grilled fish — without the theatrics of trendier areas. It's a neighbourhood that rewards those looking for genuine everyday Korean food at prices that haven't been adjusted for tourists.
Bon Tuna Restaurant near Taereung Entrance Station This is a great place to enjoy hontamuguro (authentic tuna) at a reasonable price. Both the tuna and sukidashi were satisfying, but the filling ending was especially delicious. The main branch is in Jangandong, and this seems to be the only branch. Room service is available, and the location is close to the station and convenient parking makes it a great place for gatherings.
This is a tuna sashimi restaurant with refills. (Some menu items are not refillable.) I ordered the Manager's Special. Basic side dishes: shrimp stew, garlic and ginkgo nuts, black sesame porridge, soybean paste soup, crab salad, vegetable salad, and three kinds of pickled vegetables. First tuna sashimi: tuna sashimi with premium cuts like belly, belly, and jowl, topped with gold dust. Second refill: special cuts topped with gold dust. Middle side dish: 2 pieces of grilled sushi per person, grilled tuna head, and shrimp tempura. Third refill: mainly meat. I was so full from the middle side dish that I didn't think I could finish it all. But I still had some alcohol left, so I ordered another refill, and the owner kindly refilled it for me. I ended up leaving with two pieces left... haha;;
