Korean cuisine (hansik) is built around balance — fermented sides (banchan), a steaming bowl of rice, and a main dish that changes with the season. Meals are served all at once rather than in courses, and sharing dishes at the table is the norm. The depth of flavor comes from slow-fermented pastes like doenjang (soybean) and gochujang (chili), which form the backbone of soups, stews, and marinades across the country.
Gangdong-gu in southeastern Seoul is a family-oriented district known for its community markets and traditional Korean restaurants. Cheonho Market offers one of Seoul's best selections of traditional banchan, grilled fish, and home-style Korean cooking away from the tourist circuit.
The taste was so-so. The price was expensive for the neighborhood. The staff were friendly, but the owner was a bit snobby. She was always making eye contact and making noises. I decided not to go back.
Visited during lunchtime at work. Sangil Restaurant has been a steady presence in Sangil-dong, a neighborhood with many new restaurants popping up and closing down. The building itself is a bit old, so the interior isn't particularly pleasant. Furthermore, it's a rare sight these days, requiring customers to take their shoes off. However, it's still popular with local residents and office workers, and the restaurant is almost always full. If you're looking for a restaurant with a long-established feel in Sangil-dong, this is the perfect place. There aren't many restaurants in Sangil-dong that serve soft tofu stew, so I visit when I crave it. The soft tofu stew isn't overly seasoned, and the individual ingredients don't assert themselves, creating a harmonious flavor. Because you have to simmer the large pot while eating, be careful that the soup may splatter on your clothes or leave a lingering smell. The restaurant also offers a generous selection of side dishes, including kimchi, vegetables, and stir-fries. While ordering a stew based on the number of people is recommended, you can also order egg rolls, stir-fried pork, or stir-fried squid. Egg rolls, in particular, aren't on the menu, but can be ordered. They cost 8,000 won. If you make a reservation in advance, you can skip the wait and enjoy your meal. If you're planning on making a reservation, try the spicy stir-fried chicken. The restaurant's signature dish, spicy stir-fried chicken, requires a brisk simmering time upon ordering, so it can take quite a while to fully prepare. Therefore, reservations are a must for office workers with limited lunch time.
