Overview
The Galgol Hangwa Experience Exhibition Hall consists of an exhibition where you can explore the history, types, and origins of traditional hangwa in the Gangneung region, as well as an experience center where you can make traditional hangwa yourself. This place was established as the first in Korea to preserve and carry forward the manufacturing techniques of master Choi Bong-seok, which was passed down from Galgol Gwajul Village, with cooperation from the government, Gangwon Province, and Gangneung City, aiming to preserve and widely promote our unique traditional foods. Along with Choi Bong-seok, a master of traditional foods and holder of Gangwon Province Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 23 [Galgol Pastries], he preserves and passes down the manufacturing techniques and unique culture passed down in Galgol Village. To properly inherit and widely promote our unique traditional foods, the Galgol Hangwa Experience Exhibition Hall was established in 2005 with support from Gangwon Province and Gangneung City, and since 2006, experience events for housewives and students have been operated. Education and hands-on activities to learn traditional Korean sweets are held year-round. The education is divided into basic, intermediate, and advanced classes. Exhibition viewing is available during summer (March~October) from 09:30~18:00, and from winter (November~February) from 10:00~17:00.
