Overview

About This Place

Naksan Park

Naksan Park sits on a hill in eastern Seoul. It's where the most powerful scene in KPop Demon Hunters takes place.

Rumi and Jinwoo have a deep talk by Seoul's ancient fortress wall. Then she sings "Free" from atop a hanok rooftop. The scene has moved millions of fans worldwide.

The KPop Demon Hunters Connection

  • "Free" Performance: Rumi sings the film's key song while sitting on a rooftop. The city lights glow below her.
  • Rooftop Conversation: Rumi and Jinwoo share their deepest talk along the fortress wall trail at night.
  • City Wall Backdrop: The Hanyangdoseong city wall appears in stunning detail in the film.
  • Night Atmosphere: The park's real-life night mood matches the film's tone.

What to See & Do

  • Seoul Fortress Wall Trail: Walk along the 600-year-old stone wall. The views of Dongdaemun are great.
  • Naksan Mountain Peak: The highest point has 360-degree views. Especially stunning at night.
  • Ihwa Mural Village: Just below the park. A colorful art village with indie cafes.
  • Stamp Tour: Collect stamps at four ancient city gates. Finish all four for a completion card.
  • Sunrise & Sunset: Both golden hours offer great light for photos.

Fan Photo Spots

  • Fortress Wall Lookout: The main viewpoint that inspired the "Free" scene. Face south toward Dongdaemun.
  • Naksan Jangsu Maeul Trail: The narrow alley that inspired the hanok rooftop sequence.
  • Night Visit: Come after 8PM to match the film's nighttime feel.

Practical Information

  • Hours: Open 24 hours.
  • Admission: Free.
  • Duration: 1โ€“1.5 hours.
  • Nearest Station: Hyehwa Station (Line 4, Exit 2). About a 10-minute walk uphill.
  • Tip: Wear good shoes as the paths are hilly. Bring a jacket for evening visits.

How to Visit Like a Fan

Naksan Park doesn't advertise itself. There's no ticket booth, no souvenir stand at the entrance, no sign pointing to the "Free" scene location. That's precisely what makes arriving here feel different from the bigger tourist sites โ€” you have to find it yourself, which means when you stand at the fortress wall lookout with the city spread below you, it actually feels earned.

The walk up from Hyehwa Station takes about 10 minutes. The path rises steeply in places, winding through a residential neighborhood before the trees open up and the stone wall comes into view. The first time the Hanyangdoseong appears โ€” grey stone against sky,600 years of history โ€” it tends to stop people mid-step.

The "Free" Lookout Point

The viewpoint used in the film's key scene faces south toward Dongdaemun Design Plaza, whose curved white form is visible at night as a glowing landmark in the middle distance. To your right, the wall climbs toward Naksan's peak. To your left, the old hanok rooftops of Jangsu Maeul village step down the hillside. In the film, this view served as the backdrop for Rumi's performance โ€” in real life, it's simply one of the better spots to stand quietly and look at Seoul for a while.

Ihwa Mural Village

Immediately below the park's east side, Ihwa Mural Village is worth 30 minutes of exploration before or after the park. The alleys are narrow and steep, covered in painted murals that have accumulated over years of rotating artists. Small cafes sit inside converted houses. The atmosphere is unhurried in a way that the main tourist neighborhoods rarely manage.

Extending the Day: Dongdaemun and Hyehwa

Dongdaemun is visible from the park and a 20-minute walk downhill from Naksan. Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) runs design exhibitions and night markets that stay open past midnight. Hyehwa neighborhood, at the base of the hill near the station, is Seoul's theatre district โ€” small stages, student cafes, and a bookshop density that rewards slow walking in the evening.

Going at Night

The park is at its best after 8PM on a clear evening. The fortress wall is lit with subtle lighting that outlines the stone against the dark sky. The city below shows a full spread of lights โ€” apartment blocks, the neon of Dongdaemun, the distant glow of central Seoul. Bring a jacket even in warmer months; the hilltop gets wind. The paths are well-maintained and feel safe throughout the evening.
