About the District
Dongdaemun-gu
Dongdaemun-gu is a 24-hour neighbourhood defined by its massive fashion markets, which draw wholesale buyers and night shoppers around the clock. The food scene is fast, cheap, and designed for people who eat at unconventional hours — naengmyeon restaurants that open at midnight, pojangmacha that come alive at 3am, and kalguksu shops that have served the same recipe for fifty years.
I went there because I wanted to eat Taeneung Galbi after a long time, and it was delicious. The staff was friendly, and the vegetables were neatly wrapped in plastic wrap. Even when there were a lot of customers, orders were taken quickly and came out quickly.

My wife's birthday was coming up, so I was wondering what to eat. I was craving old-fashioned pork ribs for the first time in a while, so I decided to go. I especially wanted pork ribs sizzling over charcoal. I happened to see this place while walking around the neighborhood, and we went to Taeneung Charcoal Grilled Ribs. It was always packed, even at night. We went around 4:30 on a holiday, and as soon as we got there, a whole crowd of people started pouring in. The regular ribs were 17,000 won, and the king ribs were 19,000 won. The king ribs were all ribs, so I ordered that. I ordered three servings, and it was quite a portion. It was enough for two people. I ordered cold noodles, plain rice, and soybean paste stew. The soybean paste stew was delicious, reminiscent of a hangover soup. Of course, the cold noodles were Hamheung-style, so they were really tasty. The pork was sizzling with a sweet marinade, and the caramelized flavor really came through, making it incredibly delicious. The downside was that the sauces weren't that great. They tasted a bit sour to me. The soy sauce for dipping wasn't my cup of tea either. However, they gave us plenty of lettuce and perilla leaves, seasoned green onion salad, and two pieces of marinated crab, one marinated in soy sauce. It was delicious. They also served wasabi radish and cold soup with the meal. It was delicious. There was ice cream, but it looked a bit old, so I didn't eat it. I had the coffee at home. Chairs like these, probably brought from the local school, don't seem to be common these days. The wooden chairs and tables really reminded me of the interior. But it's incredibly busy. There's a lot of people grilling meat here and there, so it's a bit hectic. The servers were relatively friendly, and the young man who brought the fire seemed nice. However, the owner was a bit of a loafer, and sometimes the order of the dishes came out wrong, so I just ignored it. I was just trying to have fun, eat, and enjoy the food, but if I insisted on waiting five minutes, it would probably be ready. The food is good, but the atmosphere is also a bit shabby, so you go there to experience it as part of the atmosphere. However, keep in mind that it is not very clean.
