Korean cuisine (hansik) is built around balance — fermented sides (banchan), a steaming bowl of rice, and a main dish that changes with the season. Meals are served all at once rather than in courses, and sharing dishes at the table is the norm. The depth of flavor comes from slow-fermented pastes like doenjang (soybean) and gochujang (chili), which form the backbone of soups, stews, and marinades across the country.
Dongdaemun-gu is a 24-hour neighbourhood defined by its massive fashion markets, which draw wholesale buyers and night shoppers around the clock. The food scene is fast, cheap, and designed for people who eat at unconventional hours — naengmyeon restaurants that open at midnight, pojangmacha that come alive at 3am, and kalguksu shops that have served the same recipe for fifty years.
Honestly, I regretted going there the first time. According to Naver, one serving was 12,000 won, so I thought it was close to home and a bit cheaper. I went a little early, but there weren't many customers, and the price was 16,000 won, so I felt a little cheated. The restaurant didn't feel very clean. The food came out very slowly, and even though they were grilling the meat, not a single side dish came out, which made me wonder what was going on. It seemed like the owners were a couple, but they were a bit slow overall. That's the downside, but the rest is the upside. The side dishes were slow to arrive because they had to mix them right away. Every single side dish was delicious, and the meat was delicious, too. The owners were also very friendly, and they even asked if I needed anything else first, which was nice. If you order rice, they give you a stew, but it was a bit disappointing compared to the side dishes. The seasoning for the eggplant salad was delicious, and they said it was delicious grilled, so I tried it, and it was delicious. Since it's close to home, I plan on visiting again.

The pork ribs were delicious, not too sweet. I loved that they hand-cut the noodles for the cold noodles. Since they even made all the side dishes themselves, you'll probably have to skip a meal to enjoy them to your heart's content...^^
