Overview
Seongbuk-dong Catholic Church was established in 1975, separated from the Hyehwa-dong parish. The statue of the Virgin Mary standing in the middle of the courtyard differs from typical statues in that it is holding a Bible instead of the baby Jesus, and its parted, thin-cut hair is also striking. It is located in a spot that anyone visiting Seongbuk-dong can see, and it is so beloved that many people take photos with the beautiful architecture as a backdrop. The stained glass of the nave features eight windows depicting the flames and their stories. There are images of the infant Jesus lying in a manger, the Virgin Mary, Joseph meditating, and the wise men from the East coming to worship with offerings. Below the cathedral is a small brotherhood monastery, and above is Gilsangsa Temple nearby, with many historical sites including embassies, museums, and art galleries from various countries.
