Overview
The Seokchon-dong burial mound cluster is a tomb complex of kings and nobles created during the Hanseong period of Baekje. During the Japanese colonial period, it was reported that about 300 burial mounds were distributed in the Seokchon-dong and Garak-dong areas, but due to urban development, only parts of the western area remain today. Since the 1970s, excavations have identified more than 7 large stone mound tombs, as well as over 30 tombs including large and dilk tombs. Among these, the largest is Tomb No. 3 in Seokchon-dong, measuring 50.8 meters wide and 4.5 meters high, a three-tiered stone mound tomb believed to be the tomb of King Geunchogo of Baekje. Since 2015, surveys at the Hanseong Baekje Museum have uncovered structures built by connecting several tombs around a square platform, as well as Baekje pottery, gold ornaments, and cremated human bones. This construction style is similar to Goguryeo sites and serves as important archaeological evidence showing the cultural connections between Baekje and Goguryeo.
