Overview
Established in 1998, Namsangol Hanok Village covers a total of 79,934m² (24,180 pyeong) on the site of the former Capital Defense Command north of Namsan, consisting of five hanok buildings, a traditional craft hall, Cheonugak Pavilion, a traditional garden, Seoul Namsan Gugakdang, and the New Millennium Time Capsule Plaza, welcoming citizens and tourists. In the heart of the bustling city, you can find various experience streets inspired by Korean traditional culture, and along the slopes of Namsan, you can enjoy beautiful scenery created by valleys and pavilions in traditional landscaping styles, as well as various flowers. At the highest point of the traditional garden is the Seoul Millennium Type Capsule Plaza, which was created in 1994 to commemorate the 600th anniversary of Seoul and to look forward to a thousand years from now, with memories of the time buried. Namsangol Hanok Village, a restored old house. Entering Namsangol Hanok Village, you will find Cheonghakji pond and Cheonugak Pavilion beside it. Passing Cheonugak Plaza and climbing the stone stairs, you come across a vintage space where hanoks that once existed throughout Seoul have been relocated and restored, allowing visitors to see the lifestyle of people in the past. There are five hanok houses in total: the house of Lee Seung-eop, a master of painting in Samgak-dong; the house of Kim Chun-young, the Five Guards in Samcheong-dong; the Min family house in Gwanhun-dong; the Jaesil of Yoon Taek-young, Prince Haepungwongun in Jegi-dong; and the Yoon family house in Ogin-dong. Of these, only the Yoon family house in Ogin-dong, so old that relocation was impossible, was restored using new materials, while the remaining buildings were relocated with their original components. Various Experience Experiences at Namsangol Hanok Village Namsangol Hanok Village offers a variety of hands-on activities. By utilizing five hanok houses, visitors can experience the interior space of a hanok while simultaneously experiencing traditional Korean cultural programs. You can try wearing hanbok, folding hanji, writing Hangul, and drinking traditional tea, and there are also traditional etiquette schools and traditional medicine workshops. On Saturday and Sunday, traditional weddings are actually held, and traditional wedding experiences are also available. Additionally, straw craft demonstrations are held at the Wondu Pavilion opposite Cheonugak, and Taekwondo demonstrations and hands-on events are available on the Cheonugak stage. At Pigeumjeong Yard, you can enjoy folk games such as jegichagi, yutnori, and biseokchigi, making it a great time for families to spend time together. Additionally, traditional cultural heritage guides are present to accompany you throughout Namsangol Hanok Village and provide explanations, so you can also receive assistance.
