Overview
The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Deoksugung is an art museum within a palace that embraces modern Korean art. It was established with the aim of systematizing the formation and development process of modern Korean art and establishing the aesthetic consciousness and historical perspective reflected in modern art, ultimately realizing the cultural identity of our nation. Seokjojeon West Hall, where the museum is located, is a representative building of modern Korean architecture completed in 1938, featuring four exhibition halls, lounges, and an art shop. As a specialized institution for modern art, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Deoksugung conducts research and investigation of modern art, exhibitions related to special exhibitions and collections, develops and operates various educational programs, conducts academic activities and publishing, and promotes international exchange of information related to modern art. Since its opening in 1998, it has held a total of 38 planned and collection exhibitions until 2005, attracting approximately 2.5 million visitors. In addition, it hosts academic events such as exhibition sessions and lectures to help foster understanding of art in general, and develops and operates various educational programs to serve as a complex cultural space in the city center. It is located 70 meters from Exit 1 of City Hall Station on Seoul Metropolitan Subway Lines 1 and 2.
