Overview
Bonghwasan is located on the northeastern outskirts of Seoul, bordering Sangbong-dong, Junghwa-dong, Muk-dong, and Sinnae-dong in Jungnang-gu, with a height of 160.1 meters and an isolated hill protruding from the plain. Except for the main ridge of Achasan to the east, the area offers excellent views to the north up to Bulamsan, Dobongsan, and the Yangju area, and since there are no high mountains to the west or south, Namsan and the southern region are also well visible. Bonghwasan is also known as 'Bongujae,' and on January 1, 1963, it was incorporated from Gyeonggi Province into Seoul City. This was the site of the Achasan beacon mound, which was transmitted from Hanisan in northern Yangju to Mokmyeoksan (Namsan), and the beacon mound was restored on November 7, 1994. Just south of the summit of Bonghwasan is the Sanshingak, the mountain shrine, which was also a place where residents performed Dodanggut and Sansin rituals about 400 years ago. Currently, Sanshingak was destroyed by fire in the summer of 1992, and now a new building made of red bricks and cement has been established.
