But the city's real magic is on its quieter edges — the disused rail paths, cliff skywalks and moon-viewing hills where you can walk for an hour with the sea at your shoulder and hardly meet a tour group. Korea's biggest port is a coastline before it's a city, and the best way to feel that is on foot.
This guide strings together the coast's most walkable corners into two unhurried days — an eastern trail of seaside rails and skywalks, a pair of island-and-hilltop lookouts, and a western run of sunsets and forest quiet. Wear shoes you can cover ground in, keep a water bottle handy, and let the tide set the pace. Nothing here needs to be rushed.
The eastern coastal trail
The city's east coast is laced with paths made for walking — an old seaside railway, a skywalk over the rocks, and a pine-shaded hill above it all. Do them in a loop across a morning and you'll barely touch a road.
Why go: A disused seaside railway line you can walk right along — twin lighthouses, cafe terraces, and the water lapping just below the sleepers.
Daritdol sea skywalkWhy go: A 20-metre glass-floored skywalk jutting straight out over the rocks — open sea below your feet and gulls at eye level.
Why go: A pine-and-cherry "moon-viewing" hill whose winding Moontan Road is made for a slow, shaded stroll high above the coast.
Islands & landmark lookouts
Two very different high points, both reached by an easy walk: a summit hall on a wooded islet, and a hilltop sky garden you ride a cable car to reach. Each hands you the coast from a fresh angle.
Nurimaru on DongbaekseomWhy go: The 2005 APEC summit hall on wooded Dongbaekseom island, wrapped by a sea-level boardwalk that loops the whole islet in half an hour.
Songdo sky gardenWhy go: Ride the glass-floored marine cable car up to a hilltop sky garden with a sweeping view back across the bay — go early, while the water's calm.
West-coast sunsets & forest
The west of the city is where Busan saves its best light — a cliff over the river estuary, a beach famous for its fountain-and-sunset show, and, inland, a hushed bamboo forest to cool off in when the day gets hot.
Nakdong estuary viewWhy go: A cliff-top deck over the Nakdong estuary's shifting sandbars — a quiet spot most first-timers miss, and pure gold at dusk.
Dadaepo fountain showWhy go: Busan's best sunset over a wide, shallow bay, capped by one of the world's largest floor fountains in a nightly music-and-light show.
Ahopsan bamboo groveWhy go: A hushed private bamboo forest in Gijang (small entry fee), its green corridors a longtime favourite of film and drama crews.
Timing the light
The Dadaepo fountain shows run roughly April to October, with several sets each evening around sunset — check the day's schedule and arrive an hour early to catch the light over the water first. Save the shaded calm of Ahopsan Forest for the heat of midday, and remember the west-coast stops sit far apart with thin transit; a taxi between them keeps you comfortably ahead of the setting sun.
The two-day flow
