Overview
The statue of Sergeant Lee Won-deung on Nodeul Island in the Han River was erected to emulate the spirit of Sergeant Lee Won-deung, who demonstrated sacred camaraderie and a spirit of sacrifice. On February 4, 1966, Sergeant Lee Won-deung, while leading the airborne special forces high-altitude infiltration and diving training, experienced a parachute malfunction when a colleague's parachute malfunctioned. He opened a comrade's parachute and fell into the Han River himself, dying in the line of duty. To emulate his noble comradeship and spirit of sacrifice, the Army formed the Lee Won-deung Memorial Committee on February 16, 1966, and erected a statue with the heartfelt donations of former soldiers. Later, the statue, which had been damaged over many years, was refurbished on June 5, 1998, in the spirit of all special forces soldiers. Nodeul Island is a complex cultural space with many attractions such as a live house, Nodeul Seoga (Nodeul Seoga), Nodeul Gallery, Nodeul Lounge, and a multipurpose hall.
