Overview
This is the statue of General John B. Coolter, located opposite the Eulji Mun-deok statue at the back gate entrance of Seoul Children's Grand Park. In recognition of his efforts to rebuild Korea, which had been ravaged after the Korean War, a statue was erected in Itaewon in October 1959. Later, in 1977, it was relocated to Seoul Children's Grand Park. During the critical Battle of Pohang during the Korean War, General John B. Coalter (1891~1983), then deputy commander of the U.S. Eighth Army, took command of the I Corps at the outbreak of war in 1950, resuming operations as part of the Eighth Army and playing a major role in halting North Korea's advance. In September, he led support units for a counterattack against North Korea. From 1952 to 1958, after his retirement, he served as the head of the United Nations Korea Reconstruction Team, overseeing expenditures exceeding $200 million for Korea's reconstruction.
