Overview
The quarry observatory is built at the top of the Changsin-dong quarry and offers a panoramic view of the city and nature. In Changsin-dong, located at the foot of Naksan in Hanyangdoseong, there was a quarry. During the Japanese Colonial Period, buildings such as the Government-General of Korea, the old Seoul Station, and the Bank of Korea were constructed, so stone materials for the exterior were needed for the structures. Therefore, Naksan was conveniently transported and made of high-quality granite, making it an ideal location to supply materials needed for construction. The reason the vertical cliffs and the severed land remain here in Naksan in Changsin-dong are traces of exploitation during this period. After the Korean War, the quarry was discontinued, and villages were formed by migrants and refugees. Climbing the stairs leading up the village, you come across a long rectangular building, which serves as the quarry observatory. The Changsin-Sungin Quarry Observatory, which opened above the quarry in November 2019, offers a panoramic view of Seoul's skyline without any obstruction. The second floor houses an indoor coffee shop (Cafe Camel). There are no stairs; you can only go up by elevator. You can see the outside scenery through the glass windows. The third floor offers a cool outdoor breeze where visitors can enjoy the scenery and nature of downtown Seoul. At sunset, the stunning night view unfolding with the sunset keeps you staying here for quite a while.
