Overview
Pungnap-dong Earthen Fortress is a flat fortress built of earth during the Hanseong period of Baekje, shaped like a boat. Currently, only about 2.7 km remain of the western fortress wall facing the Han River, which was lost, but it is estimated to have originally had a total circumference of 3.7 km, which is larger and more magnificent than Goguryeo's Guknaeseong or Silla's Wolseong. The original walls were 10.8 meters high, and through two expansions, they expanded into a large-scale fortress reaching up to 13.3 meters. During the great flood of the 1925 Eulchuk year, artifacts such as bronze headpieces and belt ornaments belonging to the upper class were excavated, leading to the identification of Hanam Wiryeseong Fortress. After being designated as Joseon Historic Site No. 27 in 1936, it was protected as a nationally designated historic site in 1963. Inside, you can find early Baekje road remains, large blood burial building sites, tile building sites, buildings believed to be temples, and ritual-related artifacts. Since 2000, the area has been divided into six zones for preservation and restoration.
