Overview
The National Assembly building was completed in August 1975 and incorporates traditional Korean beauty into a modern architectural style. It is regarded as the largest single parliament building in the East. The gray-green dome of the National Assembly was made of copper plates; when first made, the plates themselves were red, but over time, the plates rusted and gradually changed to their current color. With a base diameter of 64 meters and a weight of 1,000 tons, this dome is supported by gray-white eaves, parapets, a tall base, and 24 footposts of octagonal columns. The 24 footnotes, each 32.5 meters tall, symbolize the 24 solar terms, and the eight pillars at the front represent the eight provinces of Korea. Additionally, the 24 columns surrounding the parliament represent the diverse opinions of the people, and the dome roof symbolizes the essence of parliamentary democracy, where public opinions are converged into a single conclusion through debate.
