Overview
As the ecologically valuable Sunpagae wetland was neglected and threatened to disappear due to inland progress, it was transformed into a swamp, prompting wetland restoration. Since 2011, through restoration projects, it has been reborn as a wetland park equipped with convenience facilities such as bird observation stations. Although Sunpo Wetland is small in scale, it retains the characteristics of a typical lagoon and is highly regarded as an educational site. Birds such as the Bulb, Sniper, Heron, White-cheeked Duck, Hawkhawk, and Kestrel are also representative birds that seek out wetlands. In particular, the swan, the founding bird of Gangneung and a winter migratory bird, arrives in late autumn and winter. Fish species such as delisted small spiny fish, mantis, herring, crucian carp, carp, and snakehead fish have settled here. As a habitat for various wetland creatures, it serves as an excellent venue not only for ecotourism but also for education.
