Overview
Crossing Yeongheung Bridge and entering Yeongheungdo, turning left leads to a hill where a monument soars into the sky and a statue of a navy soldier in a pose as if ready to charge toward the sea. This is where the Navy Yeongheungdo Monument stands. The Navy Yeongheungdo Memorial was erected to honor the noble achievements of the Navy intelligence unit and the 14 anti-communist youth groups of Yeongheungdo during the Incheon Landing Operation during the Korean War in 1950. On September 15, 1950, our South Korean and UN forces successfully completed the Incheon Landing Operation, which involved not only soldiers but also members of the Korean Youth Corps defense corps, organized by residents of Yeongheungdo. On September 13, the Young National Defense Corps, welcoming North Korea's battalion-level troops, made a decisive contribution to the victory of the operation under the desperate naval gun support of the 703rd Fleet. The monument commemorates the noble achievements of the fallen Navy soldiers in the Yeongheung District and the Korean Youth Corps defense unit members who died in Yeongheung-myeon, and was erected to honor their spirit of sacrifice and promote security awareness. Near the monument, the retired Navy ship Chamsuri is also on display, which can be viewed together. The Chamsuri is a fast speed boat tasked with suppressing North Korean preemptive provocations by colliding with enemy ships during assault maneuvers against North Korean patrol boats, damaging the enemy hull. The Naval Yeongheungdo Memorial and the Chamsuri are valuable places that can inspire historical and security awareness.
